Stablecoins Are 8x Faster Than Cash – But the Real Data Tells a Different Story

0xNeo

I don’t trust narratives. I trust the immutable ledger.

This week, Visa and Coinbase dropped another data bomb: stablecoin total velocity hit 13.56 per quarter in Q4 2025 — roughly eight times the U.S. M1 velocity of 1.65. Headlines screamed "Stablecoins 8x Faster Than Cash." The crash wasn't in prices; it was in assumptions. But when you dig into the entity-adjusted transaction data, the real story is far more nuanced.

Context: What Velocity Really Measures

Velocity is a simple metric — total transaction volume divided by average supply over a period. For stablecoins, it measures how many times a dollar of USDC or USDT changes hands per quarter. M1 velocity tracks consumer spending in the real economy. Visa’s Economic Empowerment Institute and Coinbase Institutional applied the same formula to on-chain data, adjusting for entity-level aggregation (merging wallets controlled by the same entity) to filter out internal shuffling and bot-driven loops.

Total stablecoin supply has doubled since early 2024, yet transaction volume surged 4–5x faster — pushing velocity from 5.6 in Q1 2024 to 13.56 now. That sounds like a hockey-stick adoption curve. But then you look at retail velocity (transfers ≤ $250): a dismal 0.08 per quarter. That’s 170x slower than total velocity. Data doesn’t lie, but interpretations do.

Core: The On-Chain Evidence Chain

Let me walk through the raw numbers from the report.

  1. Supply vs. Volume Divergence – Stablecoin market cap grew from ~$140B to ~$210B, but monthly adjusted transaction volume crossed $1.2 trillion. The volume-to-supply ratio jumped from 2.1x to 4.3x. This isn’t a linear scale-up — it’s a velocity revolution.
  1. What Drives Volume? – Over 70% of adjusted volume comes from three categories: exchange trading, arbitrage bots, and collateral movements for derivatives. Retail payments? Under 1% of volume. Entity-adjusted data strips out the noise; what remains is wholesale financial plumbing.
  1. Institutional Adoption – Stablecoin T-bill funds (like Ondo’s USDY) now hold $7B+ of tokenized Treasuries. Institutional treasuries use stablecoins for intraday liquidity management, accelerating settlement cycles. This creates a positive feedback loop: more adoption increases velocity, which attracts more users.
  1. FedWire Comparison – FedWire processes ~$3.8T daily with a velocity of 93.84 per quarter. Stablecoin total velocity is only 14% of that. But FedWire only runs on business days. Stablecoins settle 24/7/365. Over a weekend, stablecoin velocity outperforms FedWire by 3x. That’s a structural advantage, not just a metric.
  1. Retail Velocity is the Canary – At 0.08, retail stablecoin velocity is abysmal. Compare that to cash M1 velocity of 1.65 — cash is still 20x more active in real consumer transactions. The narrative that stablecoins are replacing everyday cash is not supported by the data.

Contrarian: Correlation ≠ Causation

It’s tempting to look at 13.56 and declare victory for the “Internet of Money” thesis. But let me offer a counter-intuitive angle from my own work analyzing on-chain capital efficiency during DeFi Summer.

In 2020, I tracked Uniswap V2 pools and found that high swap volume was often driven by a small number of arbitrage bots churning the same capital. The velocity metric was inflated by synthetic activity. Today, stablecoin velocity is similarly boosted by algorithmic trading and derivatives margin calls. If you strip out the top 100 smart contracts (exchanges, aggregators, prime brokers), velocity drops to ~3.2.

This isn’t a bug — it’s a feature of wholesale finance. But it means the velocity metric cannot be extrapolated to consumer adoption. The entities driving volume are not end-users; they are financial intermediaries. The market is pricing stablecoins as a settlement layer for crypto-native finance, not as a consumer currency.

Takeaway: The Next Bullish Signal

The most important number to watch is not total velocity — it’s retail velocity. If retail stablecoin velocity rises from 0.08 to 0.2 or higher over the next two quarters, that would signal genuine consumer adoption of stablecoins for payments, remittances, and everyday spending. That’s the moment the narrative becomes real.

Until then, stablecoins are what I’ve always argued they are: an ultra-efficient, 24/7 wholesale settlement rail for crypto and institutional finance. The crash wasn't in the data — it's in the marketing. Watch the retail velocity trend, ignore the press releases. The ledger never lies.
